WA Italian Team of the Century – Nominees Released

February 22, 2024

The WA Italian Team of the Century is an initiative created to recognise players of Italian heritage for their noteworthy contributions to Australian Rules Football in Western Australia.

The exceptional group of players that will form the prominent 22-man team will be unveiled at an elegant black-tie event held at Optus Stadium on Thursday, 16 May 2024. We look forward to welcoming distinguished guests, including player nominees and finalists, dignitaries and esteemed members of the Italian community in WA.

We are grateful to have the ongoing support of the WA Football Commission and WAFL Clubs, who have assisted our illustrious selection committee in finalising the nominees. Decorated player, commentator and coach, Dennis Cometti, is joined on the selection committee by Tony Micale, Greg Wardell-Johnson, Sean Cowan, John Townsend, Ron Alexander, Stephen Malaxos and George Michalczyk, all of whom have contributed to the game by playing, coaching or through their specialised knowledge and dedication to honouring the game’s rich history.

A player is eligible for selection in the WA Italian Team of the Century if:

  • he has played senior WAFL/AFL football; and
  • he is either Italian born or a first or second generation Australian of Italian origin (i.e. at least one of his parents and/or grandparents is Italian-born).

A narrowed list of 50 nominees has been released.
