WA Italian Golf Club
Western Australian Italian Golf Club (WAIGC) - Inauguration and History
Following a game of golf at Medway Golf Club in Victoria in 1972, Mr Tony Meden approached a small group of Italian businessmen and proposed an idea of forming an Italian Association of Golfers. Most enthusiastic about his proposal, they established the Victorian Italian Golf Club and their membership rapidly grew from 15 to 200 members in the first decade.
In 1989, the South Australian Italian Golf Club was formed, followed by the Italian Golf Association of Sydney in 1996 and the Italian Golf Association of Queensland in 2002. During the 1990’s, the Annual Interstate Games between the various golf associations quickly became the highlight of the golfing calendar and gave members a great way to socialise and make new friends from around Australia.
In 2015, a small delegation from the WA Italian Club, comprising Charles Foti, Domenic D’Latte, Joe Radici, Nunzio Nici and Dante Michetti (pictured above from left to right) were invited to attend the Festival City Challenge Cup, a tournament created to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the interstate golfing competition. Following this invitation, they returned to Perth and the WAIGC was established. The WAIGC inaugural season commenced in February 2016.
Since inauguration the WAIGC has arranged an annual golf calendar comprising of monthly golf games at WA’s leading private golf clubs, monthly award presentation dinners, the annual award presentation dinner, selecting a team to compete in the Italian Golf Challenge Cup, a friendly national competition between all Italian golf clubs across Australia, annual charity events to raise funds for a worthy charity and much more.
After the passing of our inaugural President, Nunzio Nici, the WAIGC ramped up its commitment to raising funds for a charity each year. In 2020 the club selected the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) association of WA. Since this time, each year, the WAIGC presents a cheque of raised funds to Care, Cure Support whose primary purpose is promoting health and providing support for people living with MND, as well as their families.
